Up in his attic he finds a Mysterious crystal music box, which leads up a stairway made of golden dust. From here Geronimo passes through to a mystical land, full of giant scorpions, Red-eyed Monsters, Witches and Mermaids.
315 pages full of amazing coloured illustrations with a Fantastic story line which takes Geronimo on his biggest adventure yet.

The Devil’s Garden

Richard Montanari

RRP: $39.00

Rating: 8/10

This is a Killer Read, Love it or we’ll replace it! A Father will do anything for his family, and this thriller becomes a fight to the family’s death.
A normal family, Mum (Abby), Dad (Michael) and twin 4 year old girls. But not is all perfect as it seems, a lawyer is tortured to death and the lawyer is known to them. Four year earlier the lawyer had handled their illegal adoption from Estonia.
You find out in the first chapter that twin girls were snatched from their mother at birth, and now their mad biological father wants his daughter back.
Going on a killing spree, the real father believes he can live forever but he needs his daughters back to make this happen. In a desperate fight to survive, Michael and Abby are forced to confront their dark past.
Tess Gerritsen even said “A relentlessly suspenseful, soul-chilling thriller that hooks you instantly”
I flicked through this book pretty quick because the plot wasn’t too hard to follow and the characters weren’t too detailed. Sometimes an easy plot is what you need when you’re on a summer break and you don’t need your brain to work too hard.

Jandal prints on the globe

Edited by Jane Gilkison & Rachel Pether

RRP $40

Rating: 8/10

Jandal, n. (new Zealand origin) 1. Durable rubber sandal or flip-flop 2. Foot wear of intrepid travellers, often found in far-flung destinations.
Straight from the Frankfurt Book Fair this is a fantastic book put together by 33 young New Zealanders travelling on their Kiwi OE telling their stories in their own words (each story almost written like a school essay).
Two local girls Leanne Blakelock and Nadia Coxhead who describe where they were born as, ‘Tara-dise’ give hot tips like, “Always make a note of the name and street of the hotel before you go out drinking” or always apply the Nike philosophy “Just Do It”. Jandal prints on the globe will take you trekking in the Bulgarian mountains, cycling in Guatemala and eating fertilised eggs in Cambodia.
You are guaranteed a giggle hearing stories of losing Bikini tops while cliff jumping or travelling in a bus packed with armed men and smuggling human cargo. (I’ m sure there are many people like me who have become a travel snob and only like to stay in a minimum of 4 star hotels. This book has given me a reality check on what I have missed out on)
This book combines 49 short stories with photos in a compilation that will inspire all from the interepid traveller to the armchair enthusiast.

The Aunt Daisy Cookbook

Author: Aunt Daisy

RRP: $30

Rating:9/10

“Good Morning, Everybody! It is a beautiful day. I just opened by back door and the sun is shining right up my back passage.”
Originally read over B radio to housewives, mothers and cooks all over New Zealand Aunt Daisy dispensed recipes, household hint and wisdom.
Not many know but Aunt Daisy (Maud Ruby Basham) was born in London in 1879, and moved to New Plymouth when she was 10 years old. Living next door to my mother in law’s Great Grandmother on Gill Street, she trained as a pupil teacher at Central School.
The new Aunt Daisy is still full of classic recipes like Girdle scones, Stuffed Monkeys and even Roasted Swan with sage and onion stuffing and dripping.
My mother in law saw the new edition in my store and pull out of her kitchen draws three original Aunt Daisy cookbooks from 1933, 1934 and 1951, which belonged to her Great Grandmother. There are two very disappointing things missing from the latest copy. The advertisements like ‘Mrs Beadle, Toilet specialist, Telephone 80’ or ‘The most appreciated item for Breakfast is, The Taranaki Daily News, Ring Phone 17, and the paper runner will deliver’. And the Household Hints like how to remove freckles or cleaning white felt hats.
This book is more about nostalgia than a new cook book.

Lance Armstrong

RRP$45.00

10/10

This book has WOW factor and the most amazing photographs, that it feels like a cross between a travel book done by Lonely Planet and a personal look into Lance Armstrong’s life.
Packed full of photographs on every page Lance explains in his own words what thoughts are going through his head while the photos were taken. A few that really stand out to me are, drug inspectors standing watching him give urine samples and giving him tips on getting the bottle in the bag (there’s a nice picture of his bottom here Mrs Brown), a full page Xray which shows the plate and screws holding his shoulder together (Yuck)and to keep him really, beautiful black and white shots with his family.
Being a big fan of The Tour De France and Lance Armstrong’s this book has shown me a different side of what you see of Lance and the race. It shows that he is a normal person, with a normal life, it’s just that his body is built like a machine (like Mr browns) and he gets to travel to the most amazing places in the world do the thing he loves the most.
A great Christmas present for any sporting person who loves cycling or if you’re like me and think Lance Armstrong is hot here’s your new coffee table book.

Beached As, Our NZ Beaches Vol 1

Craig ‘CPL’ Levers

Retail: $50

Rating: 9/10

With Christmas less than two months away you need to start checking your lists of what to buy for the family. If you have one of those really hard people who have everything or don’t want anything, this would be my pick of books for them in my store.
Craig Levers self-employed PhotoCPL Media, surveyed over 500 kiwis earlier this year to find out what they wanted in a NZ beach book. From the feedback he produced a very passionate coffee table book of 33 of the best beaches in New Zealand, and of course Oakura Beach is one of them.
Craig refers Oakura Beach ‘to the phenomenon of the ‘Ao-a-kura’ which means ‘the light that comes with the red sky’. The picture of Oakura Beach is breath taking like the rest of the book.
There are stories attached to some of the pages written by notable New Zealanders like Barabara Kendll, Maz Quinn, John ‘Cocksy’ Cocks (celebrity builder) and Josh Kronfeld.
Each beach has the latitude and longitudes for you to tap into your GPS (in the 70’s I’m sure we found beaches by stopping on the side of the road to eat our sandwiches mum packed).
Craig has promised if your favourite beach isn’t in this book he is working on volume two to fix that dilemma.

A Kiwi Jingle Bells

Author Yvonne Morrison and Deborah Hinde

Last year we couldn’t get enough of this Awesome New Zealand family book and CD. This year we have stock already instore so you can send to your family overseas to reminder them of what they are missing.
Written with the words based our good old Christmas carol ‘Jingle Bells’ your whole family will be taken on an adventure of their own childhood memories.
“Dashing to the bay, in a Kombi campervan, Christmas at the beach- the family’s master plan, dad is at the wheel and mum sits by his side, we kids are squabbling in the back, as we go for a ride.”
“Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells , jingle all the way, Christmas in New Zealand on a sunny summer’s day, ay!, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all the way, Oh what fun it is to have a Kiwi holiday, ay!” (Ed: Good song for you to sing at the Xmas table)

Chilly bins, hokey-pokey ice cream, boogie boards, togs, fish ‘n’ chips and cheerios, L&P, pavlova, Anzac bikkies, choccy fish, sunscreen and the cuzzies (and I’m sure the Aussies will try and claim a few of those items as their own).

Kiwi Trucker’s Guide to Life

Tim Chadwick

Retail: $35

Rating: 8/10

I grew up as a truckies daughter and parked next to my house at least one a week we have one of the most beautiful trucks in New Zealand, a bright green Peterbilt (less than 6months old), owned by our neighbour Tony Uhlenberg from Uhlenberg Haulage. So I have a bit of a weak spot and a little understanding of Trucks thanks to Dad.
31 chapters full of pictures and stories of what happens in the day and life on the road in New Zealand. Where they stop for their hot pie and fish n chips (which is very important) to what truck they started out driving. One thing I must say I’m sure some of these trucks are more important than their wives as they are beautifully groomed and most even have names like Kerri-Ann, Crazy Horse and even Optimus Prime.
I’m pleased to say Chapter 19 is called “Virago in a Volvo” – Katrina “(Kat) Blackwell who decided to give men a miss after a bad relationship and tells her story of how she focuses on Trucks instead.
Even though this is book is a journey into the heartland of New Zealand the Author Tim Chadwick is a local man, from Inglewood, therefore this book is full of local truckies and their rigs. Symons Transport, Fonterra and Uhlenberg Haulage are a few.

Title: The Accidental Billionaires

Author: Ben Mezrich

RRP: $38

Rating: 8/10

Sex, Money, Betrayal and the Founding of Facebook. I don’t get these social networking sites, I would rather waste my time talking face to face or picking up the phone and dialling, maybe I’m old fashioned or just like the sound of my own voice (I wonder what Ed thinks of that one).

A true story of how Facebook was developed by two Ivy League geeky outcasts at Harvard. One lonely night, Mark Zuckerberg hacked into Harvard's computer systems, copying the photos of every girl on campus to create a website that let students vote on the hottest chick, (nearly getting himself kicked out of school). In just two hours over 80% of Harvard’s population had voted crashing the schools entire computer system.

Mark and Eduardo Saverin both computer nerds, together created something less controversial called ‘The Facebook’. This was only the start of an unbelievable power they couldn’t control. The Winklevoss twins - two six foot five, identical twin Olympic Rowers, the top predators at Harvard's social food chain - felt that Mark had stolen their idea and the first of a number of legal battles over the site's origins began.

The Accidental Billionaires is a fun and easy read, and provides decent entertainment to anyone interested in the rocky history of the world's biggest social networking platform. A site that is meant to bring friends and family and together and sometimes creates love interests became an out and out war for Mark and Eduardo. Maybe the saying of ‘money doesn’t buy happiness’ is true.

Title: Phewee!

Author: Stella Gurney
Illustrated: by John Lambert

RRP: $15

Rating 9/10

My 19 daughter Kelsi, who is studying Early Childhood has just stolen this book off me while I was writing this review, as she walked out with it she said, “cool book to read at mat time, not too long, with really wicked pop ups”. You couldn’t get a better sales pitch than that.

Phewee is a fabulous story about a Skunk called Scumble who is struggling to sleep because there is a “horrible pong”, so he sets off to find somewhere less niffy to nap.

On each page he spots an animal hiding, to which you open the flap and are surprised with a gorgeous pop up animal, all of which are animal’s kiwi kids probably have never heard of, a Moose, a Beaver, a Chipmunk and a Bear.

Scumble blames each animal for smelling like centipede’s socks, warthog’s week-old washing, anteater’s armpits and other insufferable stenches.

As you would of already guessed Scumble the skunk works out it was him making the smell all along and decides he can live with it,(I guess he doesn’t get a choice).

I have had so much fun reading this to kids, the voices of the animals are so enjoyable to invent and the illustration are cleverly done. A creative and educational story which could be used as a tool to explain about other animals around the world.

Title: Bloodline and Blood Bond

Author: Michael Green

RRP: $37

Rating: 10/10

Do you need a couple of books you can’t put down and don’t get any jobs done around the house this weekend? Well you have just found them! I had to wait a year for Michael Green’s follow up book to Bloodline called Blood Bond, a yes it was worth the wait. These are the hot two books for the month.

The World Wide Web goes down and SARS breaks out. Everybody in the world dies expect for the Chatfield family. There is something in their Bloodline. Based in New Zealand the Chatfield family know that for their ultimate survival they must increase their gene pool. They set up a new village in an Auckland harbour before two members of the family embark on a dangerous journey in a small yacht to England.

The community they find on the other side of the world is a very different one, based on the rule of fear. Not only does it look impossible to take anyone back to New Zealand, but it may also be impossible for them to escape themselves.

As always Random House NZ produces fantastic modern contemporary fiction which is bordering on been a thriller. An exciting page-turner that keeps surprising . . . up to the last page.

I don’t want to tell you anymore about these books. If you have enjoyed the other books I recommend, then you must read Bloodline and Blood Bond. They are in my top 5 books for the year.

MONSTER

Author: Allan Hall

RRP: $28

Rating: 7/10

A Rapist Father. A Captive Daughter. A Secret Dungeon. 24 years and 7 incest children later, the nightmare ends and the story of the Fritzls can be told.

Some might say, “why read?”, and my reply is “I’m intrigued”.

Written by Allan Hall former bureau chief of Britain’s Sun and Daily Mirror. It doesn’t really fulfil my needs of what I wanted to know as a lot of it is written with hearsay. But still makes the picture a little clearer of what happened .

As a child in the Adolf Hitler era, Josef Fritzl formed a weird relationship with his mother. Later when he married his wife Rosemarie (who I don’t believe knew what was going on in the dungeon) whom he had 7 children with, was convicted of rape and did time, which wasn’t common knowledge. He raised his children with discipline which was so strict, they called him Dracula. He formed a real hate for one of his children Elisabeth, who he lured into the dungeon.

Allan Hall has reconstructed a monstrous personality from interviews with psychologists, neighbours, colleagues and friends who knew Josef, as well as an insight of his own chilling confession.

Monster has pictures of Josef (the creep) going on holiday leaving the prisoners for weeks at end as well as pictures and a layout of the inside of the soundproof bunker .

A disturbing read, but a must for people like me who like the sky ci Channel.

What Remains Behind

Author: Dorothy Fowler

Radom House

RRP: $30

As a first time New Zealand novelist, Dorothy Fowler’s book is modern, contemporary fiction. Chloe an archaeologist is sent to a dig on a 1870s religious settlement of New Zealand.
Chloe finds more than a few shards of pottery, she discovers human remains. As she tries to work out what happened in the fire that destroyed the buildings and ended the community.
Can be a little hard to follow due to switching between a 1880’s diary and the current day. A gripping novel full of murder, mystery and love.

To Love, Honour and Betray (Till Divorce Us Do Part)

Kathy Lette

RRP $37

Rating 8/10

My husband Paul kept telling me to stop reading out aloud when I read this book. I have never read a book with so many funny one liners, that I just wanted to share it with someone. I recommend you read this one with one of you girlfriends and a bottle of wine.
Moving his family from England to Australia to take a sports management job Jasper leaves his wife and kids in a rental home on the beach in Sydney and run off with Lucy’s best friend Renee a skinny, fake-breasted, leopardskin- and-heels-clad designer .
But it gets worse for Lucy before it gets better. She loses weight with all the stress, meets a new best friend and a couple of hunks (Australian life-saving coach Lockie, buff, buff and slimy but mouth-watering ‘ Pom’ Sebastian). Lucy makes the discovery that her toy boy is also dating her daughter and that he's been paid to do so by her ex best friend as ammunition over her custody battle with Jasper, that she at last learns to stand on her own two stilettos.
To Love, Honour and Betray is a survival guide for anyone who has realized that the ideal marriage is like an orgasm, many of them are faked.

Tomorrow Code

Brian Falkner

RRP $20

Rating 9/10

What a wicked teenage book. Based in Auckland teenagers Tane, Rebecca and Fatboy (Tane’s Brother) get sent a mystery code from the future which they need to work out to save New Zealand from a mystery fog. With a set of lottery numbers, circuit diagrams for a transmitter, and gloomy warnings about a “Chimera Project”, the kids take you on an action packed adventure. Crashing a Fire Truck next to the Auckland Sky Tower and driving a submarine called Mobius around the Islands out in the Auckland Harbour.
The author educates you about Maori traditions like Moko’s and Marae’s and talks about New Zealand Nature Bush and Birds, these things will relate to most kiwi kids (like me).
Part Science Fiction, part Thriller Brian Falkner keeps it real in how kids deal with issues in their lives. There is no sex, drugs or vampires in this book.
Tomorrow Code is the most stimulating teenage book I have read in a long time. I have been recommending it to adults and kids any age 11+. It is a finalist for the New Zealand Post Children’s Book awards, and it’s my favourite and I really hope it wins.
To sum up, cool teenagers, dealing with thrilling, high-stakes situations and man eating mist - you can't go wrong with this one.

Too Close To Home

Linwood Barclay

Rating 8/10

If you like Harlan Coben, you’ll love Linwood Barclay. This novel is a ‘one –sit thriller’, which is what I have a weakness for in a book.
It's no fun to read a book review that steals the suspense, so there will be no incriminating details this time, I want you to read this one, you will love it.
The Cutter family’s next - door neighbours, the Langleys, are gunned down in their house. The Cutter’s comfort themselves thinking lightning wouldn’t strike twice in the same place.....unless the killers went to the wrong house......
Too Close To Home has an extraordinary and complicated series of events that, before the 380 pages are done, are going to lay bare many shameful secrets.
Linwood Barclay has put more twists into this book than in a packet of twisties. It’s a book you would sit into the wee hours of the night waiting for the killer to be revived, but it’s not that simple, even I took a while to work it out.
It doesn’t take me much to get addicted to a good book (like good wine) but this one is utterly riveting. It’s not gorey or bloody so suits the male and female reader or even a mature teenager.

Author: Bill Bryson
Published by: Doubleday
It struck Bill Bryson one day that we devote a lot more time to the Wars of the Roses or the Normandy Landings than considering what most of history really consists of: centuries upon centuries of people quietly going about their daily business - eating, sleeping, having sex, endeavouring to be amused. So he started a journey around his house, an old rectory in Norfolk, wandering from room to room considering how the ordinary things in life came to be. Along the way he allowed himself delightful digressions on the history of everything from architecture to epidemics, from food preservation to the discovery of electricity, and from crinolines to toilets. And to his dismay, he also encountered a terrifying variety of dangers to our health and happiness. Where the prizewinning A Short History of Nearly Everything was a sweeping survey of Earth, the universe and everything, At Home is an inwards look at all human life through ... more

Featuring 40 or so tall tales - most true, some not-so-true, but all entertaining and illustrated by New Zealand's best known country cartoonist and artist, David Henshaw. A note from the authors : Hard times and hard lives generate hard-case characters, and with them go a host of yarns. The Waikato is no exception. Tucked away beneath the veneer of success, green pastures and four-wheelers there is a background of years of hard labour and drudgery often rewarded by ongoing poverty. A generation or two down the track we all benefit from the sheer bloody-minded persistence of those families who turned peat swamps and untrackable hills into the multimillion-dollar dairy and sheep farms that now dominate the whole area. Those pioneers, and the more recent Waikato characters, have left behind a fair bunch of stories. There is an old saying that if you didn't laugh you'd just sit down and cry. I have no doubt that the latter happened fairly ... more

Nelson Mandela is the world's greatest idol. He has been mythologised as a flawless hero of the liberation struggle. But how exactly did his early personal and political life shape the triumphs to come? This book goes behind the myth to find the man who people have forgotten or never knew - Young Mandela, the commited freedom fighter, who left his wife and children behind to go on the run from the police in the early 1960s. For the first time, we have evidence of a specific personal motivation for Mandela's fight against apartheid, and the book sheds light on the significant extent to which Mandela relied on white activists - a part of South African history the ANC has ignored or tried to bury. Mandela's historic achievements came with a heavy price - this biography graphically describes the emotional turmoil he left in his wake. After meticulous research, and taking a lead from Mandela's trusted circle, the author discovers much ... more
