Tranquil lakes, wide open valleys, mossy beech forest, rugged mountains and the excitement of winter snow. Nelson Lakes National park is a good place to explore, whether seeking relaxation on the lakes or a challenging back country experience. Short and long walks around the main lakes cater for family groups and the less adventurous, whereas the tracks and huts in the valleys are ideal for trampers, expecially for those wishing to cross the high mountain passes.
The lakes and rivers provide excellent kayaking, sailing, boating and fishing. The main game animals are red deer and chamois. In winter there are opportunities for challenging climbing and ski-touring. Two skifields are located near St Arnaud: a club field on Mt Robert; and a commercial field, Rainbow Skifield, in the Wairau valley.
