Author: Kerre Woodham with Gareth Brown
Published by: HarperCollins New Zealand
When celebrated radio personality and columnist Kerre Woodham found herself forty, overweight and depressed she faced two choices – do nothing and probably not make it to fifty or do something and get her life back. Fortunately for all of us, and especially those women who like to eat and dress well, she decided to fight back. Leaving kilos of herself and two bra sizes behind ‘somewhere in the Waitakeres’ she embarked on a fitness and training regime, with a goal to complete the Auckland marathon. To the laugh out loud delight and support of her readers and listeners, she battled her way to fitness and achieved her goal – then decided that she didn’t want to stop. With the 2008 New York marathon in her sights, Short Fat Chick to Marathon Runner documents her life changing decision to get fit and stay fit, eat what she wants and still wear a size 12 dress. Paperback
Author: Gareth Morgan & Geoff Simmons with John McCrystal
Published by: Public Interest Publishing (NZ)
New Zealand’s health system is a political football, held together only by the high quality of our nurses and doctors, according to a new book from Gareth Morgan.
While the local health system scrubs up surprisingly well globally, Dr Morgan finds a substantial mismatch between the public’s expectations and what the health system actually delivers. Morgan and Simmons go behind the scenes of the New Zealand public health system and bring clarity to the issues that need to be addressed if crisis is to be avoided.
The book explores the consequences of ongoing avoidance of the tough calls on rationing and prioritisation. It considers how many New Zealanders are already suffering or missing out from health care because of ad-hoc interventions in response to pressure groups.

Silk Riders : Jo and Gareth Morgan's incredible journey on the trail of Marco Polo order quantity

NZ$ 39.00 each
Paperback
Author: Joanne & Gareth Morgan with John McCrystal
Published by: Random House New Zealand Ltd
The Silk Rider trip was conceived after three biking trips of shorter duration – two in the Himalayas and one in the Andes. It was very clear that month-long trips are great but there is another level – a number of countries to navigate and borders to negotiate; a trip without any pre-arranged accommodation; a motorcycle journey without support vehicles so each rider is self-contained; and finally a theme to ride bikes by. That theme was “In the footsteps of Marco Polo” and it set a backdrop to this traverse of Eurasia. Marco (1254-1324) was born on Korcula, an island in the Adriatic off Split in Croatia. But he was raised in Venice and in 1271 set out with his two uncles for Cathay. The return journey took 24 years – outbound by land alone taking 3 years, in China for 17 years and then home by sea, dictating his book, "The Travels of Marco Polo", from a Genoa prison cell 3 years later in 1298. As he lay on his deathbed he confessed, ... more

Paperback
Author: Michael King
Published by: Penguin Books Ltd
Shortlisted for the 2004 Montana NZ Book Awards, History section.

New Zealand was the last country in the world to be discovered and settled by humankind. It was also the first to introduce full democracy. Between those events, and in the century that followed the franchise, the movements and the conflicts of human history have been played out more intensively and more rapidly in New Zealand than anywhere else on Earth.

The Penguin History of New Zealand, a new book for a new century, tells that story in all its colour and drama. The narrative that emerges is an inclusive one about men and women, Maori and Pakeha. It shows that British motives in colonising New Zealand were essentially humane: and that Maori, far from being victims of "fatal impact", coped heroically with colonisation and survived by selectively accepting and adapting what Western technology and culture had to offer.

Author: Rachel Teen
Published by: David Bateman Ltd
RSA Country opens the door to the many New Zealanders who have served in the armed forces over the years. Its pages reflect many past sacrifices, it proudly records the present, and it looks, with hope, to the future. In 2008, the 90th year since the end of World War I, Rachel Teen travelled the length of New Zealand with her camera visiting as many of the operating Returned Service Association clubs in the country as possible.
This photographic journal is the result.
A snapshot of the RSA in that year, her travels brought her into contact with the servicemen and women, many of whom were instrumental in laying the foundations for the RSAs we see today, who do so much to keep the memories of their fallen comrades alive, as well as in supporting those who remain.
She also met many others who work in the RSAs, who are active in keeping the spirit of the RSA movement vibrant and of relevance to current and future ... more

Paperback
Author: Catherine Dame Tizard
Published by: Vintage New Zealand
The Tizard political dynasty is headed by a woman many would consider a New Zealand matriarch, Dame Catherine Tizard, formerly mayor of Auckland and our first woman Governor General.

Feisty, irreverent, shrewd, fun-loving and resourceful, she built the Aotea Centre and lifted Government House out of its stiff and starchy past and into a more relevant present. When she bungy-jumped off the SkyTower for charity the Queen sent her a telegram: 'Well jumped. Elizabeth R.'

The daughter of left-wing Scots immigrants and born in a tiny Waikato town, she personifies the New Zealand story: how talent and determination and a zeal to leave the world a better place than you found it can take you to the top. This lively memoir captures her rich and remarkable life

and is full of fascinating insights into some of the key social movements and political events and intrigues of our modern history.

Published by: Penguin Books (N.Z.) Ltd.
I was jealous of her writing – the only writing I have been jealous of.—Virginia Woolf

Widely acknowledged as New Zealand's finest writer, Katherine Mansfield holds a special place in the hearts of New Zealanders. A new biography is a significant literary event.

Katherine Mansfield: The Story-teller is the first new biography of Mansfield for a quarter of a century. It is published at a time when interest in Mansfield and her work is increasing throughout the world.

Kathleen Jones gives a vivid portrayal of Mansfield, correcting previous misinterpretations of her illnesses and relationships, and weaving a compelling drama from the detail. The story extends further still, beyond Mansfield's death in 1923, to include the subsequent life of her husband, John Middleton Murry, shedding fascinating new light on the way Murry controversially manipulated the publication of some of Mansfield's unpublished work.

Author: David Grant
Published by: Random House
Ken Douglas was raised in a hardworking, tough-talking, union-focussed Wellington family and got into union politics as a very young working man. Hard-nosed, pragmatic and never scared of a scrap, he rose through the ranks, got deeper into left-wing ideology and activity with his membership of the Socialist Unity Party, and ultimately became head of the FOL, and the most powerful unionist in the land.
Depending on your politics, he was one of the most respected or the most hated men in the country; ironic then that in later years he was appointed to some of the country's most important boards.

In this powerful biography, David Grant - who had unprecedented access to Douglas - explores the facets of this remarkable man, who was there during the union movement's most powerful days and watched its emasculation.
It is a unique portrait of a unique New Zealander, whose life has been this country's times.

Author: Murray Moorhead
Published by: Zenith Publishing
Although they fought together, died together, shared the dangers of battle together - for kiwi colonial soldiers fighting alongside their British equivalents the yardstick used to judge bravery was firmly tilted to one side. No matter how devoted or outstandingly brave, the coveted Victoria Cross by its very charter could only sit on a heart that pumped English blood through its veins. It was a time of supreme inequality.
When the Victoria Cross was awarded to Captain Charles Heaphy it rocked the hallowed halls of England. He was a mere colonial . . . The shock waves also resonated across New Zealand; this jealously guarded honour surely belonged to an elite circle. A rosette, chevrons and a few pounds were suggested as suitable reward for the colonial bravest of the brave.
Real recognition for the most gallant kiwi soldiers only came with Governor Sir George Bowen's instigation of New Zealand’s own military award. March 11 1869 ... more

If a nation could be said to have a dominant passion, New Zealand's would be its landscapes. Images of spectacular natural features pervade the media - between the pages of glossy coffee-table books, in tourism promotions and on screen as the setting for blockbuster movies - but are these scenes that define its people? For Beyond the Scene the editors asked eleven writers to choose a landscape that was important to them and to write it from the perspective of their life experience and knowledge. From farmer to art historian and film critic, geographer and planner to lawyer, from landscape architect to poet and environmentalist - these are diverse voices. Each discusses a very different landscape: from suburban Auckland and rural Waikato to a planned town in Canterbury and much-filmed Otago. Together, they investigate the relationship landscape has to identity, community and psyche.

Hunting : A New Zealand History order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 50.00 each
Paperback
Author: Kate Hunter
Published by: Random House New Zealand Ltd
Thousands of New Zealanders have hunted in the past and continue to hunt today.
New Zealanders like to think of themselves as a nation of 'can-do' people. The national legend is populated
by physically capable, self-reliant men and women. That legend used to be based on pioneers and farmers,
and has now come to encompass our identity as outdoor adventurers and conservationists.
Hunters belong in this national story as well. Hunting was essential to successful colonisation. It touched the
core need to eat and the human desire to share meals. It served as a form of community building, of family
cohesion, it involved inter-generational knowledge being handed down. Cutting across racial and class
differences, hunting tells us more about different groups and their perspectives on the natural world.

NZ$ 45.00 each
Paperback
Author: Mark Derby (ed)
Published by: Canterbury University Press
In the first-ever account of New Zealand's role in Spain's civil war of 1936-39, Mark Derby presents the personal stories of some extraordinary individuals who became involved. For example:
* A fighter pilot from Wellington who landed his plane with a shattered shoulder, then left for Hollywood to make movies with Errol Flynn
* A tough young wharfie from Napier who buried 80 of his fellow fighters in a single grave, and later became a union leader and thorn in the side of PM Rob Muldoon

Derby records also the actions of New Zealanders who worked for the Spanish cause at home by raising funds, lobbying politicians, writing poems and spreading propaganda.
Kiwi Companeros includes contributions from some of New Zealand's leading writers and historians. It draws on personal letters, recently released military documents and previously unpublished photographs to tell an all-but-forgotten story.

NZ$ 50.00 each
Paperback
Author: Jenny Coleman
Published by: University of Otago Press
Amy Bock's life has been the inspiration for plays, books, a television programme, a photographic exhibition, a musical composition and recent events surrounding the re-enactment of her wedding as Percy Redwood at Kaka Point 100 years ago. Mad or Bad? is the first full-length biography of New Zealand's most notorious female criminal con artist. Born in Hobart, Tasmania, Amy had a convict heritage on both sides of her family. While she gained notoriety in 1909 for her impersonation of a man and marriage with an unsuspecting woman, the author shows how her whole life was one of fraud and misrepresentation. After teaching for six years in Victorian schools until she was asked to resign, Amy migrated to New Zealand in 1884. Assuming a variety of personae and remaining conveniently itinerant, she pursued a consistent course of petty crime for the next twenty-five years. In presenting her colourful and chequered life, this biography leaves ... more

Shattered Glory: The New Zealand Experience at Gallipoli and the Western Front order quantity

NZ$ 45.00 each
Paperback
Author: Matthew Wright
Published by: Penguin Books (N.Z.) Ltd.
The Gallipoli campaign of 1915 destroyed New Zealand's fantasies of war as a glorious schoolboy adventure on behalf of a beloved Empire. The Western Front campaign that followed in 1916-18 gave shape to the emotional impact. It was a horror world of death and mud that destroyed the souls of the young men who fought in it. Together, these two campaigns shaped the lives of a generation of New Zealanders and have given a particular meaning to modern memory of war.
In Shattered Glory, highly regarded historian Matthew Wright illuminates New Zealand's human experience during these two First World War campaigns, exploring the darker side of New Zealand's iconic symbols of national identity and explaining some of the realities behind the twenty-first century mythology.
