God's Messenger: J. F. Riemenschneider and Racial Conflict in 19th Century New Zealand order quantity
  +   -

NZ$ 20.00 each
Hardback
Author: Peter H. Oettli
Published by: Huia Publishers
A new biography of the North German missionary Rev. J. F. Riemenschneider (1817-1866) who settled in the Taranaki region in the first half of the nineteenth century, based on a thorough reading of all original documents by and about him.
The book places him into the historical and social context, which not only illuminates his life and work, but throws new light on aspects of nineteenth century New Zealand history. The book outlines Riemenschneider's upbringing in North Germany, his arrival in New Zealand and setting up of a missionary station in Taranaki, rifts between the missionary and his people, his exile from Taranaki and setting up in Otago. Previous biographies have either not accessed all the original German documents relating to Riemenschneider, or have failed to incorporate the social and historical context. This new biography does both.

NZ$ 60.00 each
Paperback
Author: Kelvin Day
Published by: Huia Publishers
The first shots were fired on Wiremu Kingi's Te Kohia pa on 17 March 1860, marking the start of twenty-one years of direct conflict between Maori and Pakeha in the Taranaki region interspersed with periods of uneasy peace, culminating in the invasion of the Parihaka settlement on 5 November 1881. In Contested Ground: Te Whenua i Tohea, Kelvin Day brings together eleven distinguished academics and historians who provide fresh and engaging insights into this turbulent period, much sourced from previously overlooked material, and a remarkable collection of photographs and illustrations. 2010 marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Taranaki Wars, and this thoughtful and informative volume helps shed new light on the people and political landscape of 19th century Taranaki and the legacy of the wars on the history of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Most eras are remembered for important events that occurred during the time. IN 1918, as New Zealand was joyously welcoming the close of he First World War, the great influenza epidemic claimed almost six thousand lives. The Napier earthquake struck in 1931 while the country plunged even deeper into the desperate times of the Great Depression. A depression that only ended with the outbreak of World War Two. By using the voices and stories of people living in Taranaki in the 1920s and 30s, writers from the New Plymouth SeniorNet Scribblers Group have compiled this revealing book which takes the reader back into the landscapes, happenings and day to day life of those challenging years.

Parihaka has become a byword for Maori refusal to yield land, culture and dignity to New Zealand's colonial government. Well after the end of the New Zealand Wars, the people of this small settlement at the foot of Mt Taranaki held out against the encroachments of Pakeha settlers in a struggle that swapped the weapons of war for the weapons of peace. Taking as their symbol the white feather, the chiefs Te Whiti and Tohu led Parihaka in one of the world's first-recorded campaigns of passive resistance.
